We believe Cork & Yoga are made for each other. The all-natural cork surface on the cork yoga mat gives you a unique grip, it's surprisingly smooth to the touch, super easy to clean and maintain, and it can be enjoyed with the purest conscience for the environment.
CORK + YOGA = LOVE
Cork is the outer bark of the Cork Oak Tree. Cork trees are the only tree in the world that regenerates stripped bark. The tree is not cut down & it regenerates new bark for more awesome yoga mats.
Cork is a truly unique resource. From Champagne stoppers to yoga mats, this material is uniquely versatile. Whilst it is naturally beautiful, it is also biodegradable and sustainable.
NATURAL
Cork is a natural raw material, 100% biodegradable, recyclable and renewable.
SUSTAINABLE
Cork can be harvested again and again from the same tree. The extraction method is safe for the tree, which is not cut down. For a new cork tree it takes 20 to 25 years before the first cork can be harvested and after this, you can harvest the bark once every 9 years.
CREATION OF OUR CORK YOGA MATS
Harvesting cork is a sustainable process. Once the cork is harvested, the cork is ground into granulates. The cork granulates proceeds to be compressed together into the robust top layer of our cork yoga mats, or into the form of our cork yoga blocks.
The finished product feels incredibly smooth to the touch, rolls up perfectly without creasing, cracking or flaking.
SUPERIOR NON-SLIP GRIP
If you’ve sweated through your fair share of yoga classes, you know just how crucial it is for your yoga gear to support you like a loyal, non-slip friend.
Well, it's finally time to bring the sweat and lose the towel with the cork yoga mat´s adaptive grip. The open cell structure gives a superior grip that gets better with moisture and sweat ✨
Sweat activates the grip, increases traction and the open cell structure transports away excess sweat preventing sweat from pooling on your mat, that can cause slipping. This makes it excellent for hot yoga!
This amazing benefit is due to the waxy substance Suberin, naturally found in the cork. It functions similarly to wax on a surfboard - preventing you from losing your grip, even in the sweatiest conditions
For those of us who don't sweat (lucky you!), you can easily increase your grip by simply spraying the cork with a little water prior to yoga practice.
ANTI-BACTERIAL
Cork is naturally anti-bacterial. In a recent study, bacteria was placed on the cork to test its anti-bacterial properties, and after 90 minutes of incubation, the bacterial reduction was almost 100% (96.93%)!
The bacteria basically could not survive on the cork surface. This makes the cork yoga mat super hygenic, avoids bad smells and very easy to clean. Bonus!
ENVIRONMENTAL
Additionally, harvesting cork bark assists in the absorption of CO2 (carbon dioxide), greenhouse gas, and in fact harvested cork trees absorbs 3-5 more CO2 than non-harvested trees. It is estimated that every year cork oak forests retain up to 14 million tonnes of CO2, a sizeable contribution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of climate change, and is an important producer of oxygen.
